Welcome to week 113 of the Draw or Die Newsletter for Visual Storytellers…
Creators often find ourselves caught in the whirlwind of chasing perfection, striving for mastery in our craft. As artists, we set high standards, envisioning flawless lines, impeccable storytelling, and breathtaking compositions. But do we need to be obsessed to become masters of our craft? And what if that chase steals away the joy of simply drawing?
The Myth of Perfection
Perfection can feel like an ever-elusive goal, always just out of reach. We tweak, refine, and sometimes even start over, hoping to get everything just right. Yet, perfection is a myth. It’s an idea that keeps shifting the goalpost, making us feel like we’re never quite good enough.
But here’s the truth: perfection isn’t the endgame. The process of drawing, the act of creating something from nothing, is what truly matters. It’s the joy, the exploration, the self-expression.
When you focus too much on perfection, you risk losing the essence of why you started drawing in the first place.
Mastery Through Balance
There's a fine line between being passionate and becoming obsessed. Passion fuels us; it drives us to improve, to innovate, and to tell our stories. But obsession can lead to burnout, anxiety, and a sense of never being satisfied. It’s crucial to find a balance.
I fall into it. Even this week, there was a day where I was up at 5am, working by 6am… and I think I may have forgotten to eat properly, and I was grinding through things and thinking so deeply all the way to about midnight when my brain just kinda blinked off. I didn’t like that. Being “in the zone” can almost feel so good, it’s like a drug.
You don’t have to be consumed by your craft like that to achieve mastery.
Mastery is a journey, not a destination. It’s about consistent growth, learning from mistakes, and enjoying every step of the way. I have to remind myself that even the masters are always learning and evolving.
It’s okay not to be a master. It’s okay to draw because it makes you happy.
Drawing is Enough
Drawing for the sake of drawing is a beautiful thing. It’s a form of meditation, a way to express feelings and ideas that words can’t capture. Whether you’re sketching in a notebook or working on a grand piece, the act of drawing itself is fulfilling.
The feeling of the pencil in your hand, the lines forming on the paper, the creativity flowing through you – that’s what it’s all about. Enjoy those moments. They’re precious.
Finding Your Balance
When you’re feeling stuck, but still seem to WANT to make something, start by reminding yourself why you love to draw. What sparked that initial joy? Hold onto that feeling. Set small, achievable goals, and celebrate your progress. Take breaks. Step back and appreciate your work without constantly critiquing it.
For those who, like me, find themselves completely obsessed with their craft, storytelling, and inspiring others – it’s important to take a step back occasionally. Remember to enjoy the process. Your passion is a gift, but it should never overshadow the simple pleasure of drawing.
Just a Reminder… for You, AND ME…
Art is a journey, a never-ending path of discovery. Embrace the imperfections, the mistakes, and the learning moments. Mastery isn’t about being perfect; it’s about growth and persistence. And sometimes, it’s about just picking up a pencil and drawing for the sheer joy of it.
Keep creating, keep exploring, and remember – it’s okay to just enjoy the act of drawing. You don’t have to be a master. You just have to be you.
Stay inspired.
