This week I thought we’d have a little fun. Bear with me.
It occurred to me this week that Santa Claus was NOT human size, but an elf.
At least according to the only known eye witness account of the holiday legend.
…his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
It all made sense now. Being able to fit down chimneys and all of that? Santa Claus was not a large man. He was plump old elf. Gnome size!
This got me thinking about the process of drawing from a writer’s description of a character. It’s a great exercise…
Now I Challenge YOU to draw your version!
This week, draw your version of “the intruder” as he is described above.
Hashtag #drawordieclub on instagram or tiktok. OR email your art to dj@drawordieclub.com
Next week’s newsletter (on X-Mas Day!) we’ll showcase all the the drawings that come in from the club!
I will try to include one link per artist as well to wherever you wish! It could be your website, store, a social link….
At least a 1000 other artists open the newsletter every week (sometimes more!) so it might be a good way to get some reach and discover other club members.
Try to get your drawing done by Friday the 23rd if possible! This will give me a little time to pull things together…
BUT WHAT IF EVERYONE DOES IT??!!
If by some crazy chance we get hundreds or 1800 Santas sent in, then I’ll make it into an even bigger project and make a big video showcasing all of it in some way.
My real agenda here?
GET YOU DRAWING!!!
We have hundreds of artists on this list that I’ve never seen your art yet! So take part if you can! Don’t delay, draw today!
I can’t wait to see yours!
Tis the Season… to Treat Yourself!
Hopefully all of your gift buying for the season is done, but don’t forget to treat yourself! Some new stickers drop today! Get some at https://drawordie.co
We’ve been experimenting with merch and suppliers the past couple months, and have a whole new set up now (thanks to Aleasha!)
Currently we ship the hats, buttons and stickers ourselves right from the Draw-ffice. The shirts and hoodies are print-on-demand and ship separately. We changed suppliers to get more inclusive sizes and better print quality.
And the new setup allows me to send you personal thank you videos with every sale, so you may see my ugly mug in your inbox shortly after you order. Thanks for all your support! Every cent goes back in to building this thing to help more artists stay encouraged out there.
STAY ENCOURAGED… in case you missed it this week over on Youtube…
On the Wednesday Warm-up I did a Scribble Challenge and drew the daily drawing Prompt of Jack Skellington while talking about encouraging things for artists:
On the Thursday Live Video Podcast, I covered the topic of SELF-SABOTAGING your own success, AND I walked through the design iteration process for new merch ideas.
AND on Friday’s video I showed you how to find your purpose as an Artist and how to set your personal pillars to help get you where you’re supposed to be going, even faster.
That was a fun week! Let’s do it all again this coming week! Make sure you’re subscribed to the channel so you don’t miss any surprise videos.
Can’t wait to see your Santas! Let’s goooo!!!!
